A nest with two eggs finally was found at the northern Dead Sea, the west bank, on the 6th (Amir Ben-dov). Long awaited find. 


Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens

At least 10 pairs were found north-west to Ramat Hovav, south of Beer Sheva (Eyal Shochat). Photo

Great find and hopefully this species is or will reinhabit the north and north-western Negev.

Levant Sparrowhawk Accipiter brevipes

Between nearly 20,000 passed on the 27th including 6000 at Eilat mountains, 4,000-5,000 at Yotvata early morning with similat numbers taking off at IBRCE and Eilot fields, and about 5000 at the North Beach on the late afternoon (Barak Granit, Noam Weiss, Sachar Shalev, IBRCE team et al.). Another 13,000 passed on the following days at Eilat mountains with addtional several thousands that took off from Aqaba and Eilot fields and date plantations. To sum, over 30,000 birds have passed in the Eilat and the Arava in two days.  Photo

Also - from the 2nd onwards, a nice wave through Israel f Black and WHite flycatchers, mainly Collard and Pied (but some Semi-collard), reaching small double figures in some places (as Yarkon Park and Jerusalem). Good numbers as well of Wood Warblers including 17 at Haifa on the 4th. Two  first European Nightjars of the season were also reported from Eilat and Tivon.

A showy bird at Mt Arbel during the recent days. Apparently a male developing breeding plumage (Amir Ben-dov)

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus

45 near 'mount' Keren, Halutza sand-dunes, Western Negev on the 4th (Elon Gur). FIrst evidence of this species to be present as a winterer in numbers, as late as 1st week March while the common knowledge about the wintering period considered that the species leaves Israel during 1st half February. Apart from the Dotterels - some 30 Cream-Coloured Coursers around.

Commoner stuff: 

At Eilat both Baillon's and Little Crake at the bird park. Quite a few Cyprus Warblers at verious places including western Israel (Modiin Hills) , but mainly at the Arava and Dead Sea. Good wave of Ruppell's Warblers mainl at western Israel along the coast (up to 4 per site) with some at Jerusalem and Eilat.
