Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis

The 7th gravis for Israel was seen and photographed at Jaffa port (Shachcar Alterman and Nethanel Yarkoni et al.). photo

 

Apart from that a nice collection of sea-birds included: 9 Cory's Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwates, 44 Yelkuan's Shearwaters, 19 Arctic Skuas, 1 Pomarine

Skua, 4 Pomarine/Arctic, 2 Gannets, 7 Kittiwakes, 1 Mediterranean Gulls and 2 Pallas's Gulls. Later on two new goodies were added:

1 at Jaffa Port (Amir Ben-dov, Noam weiss et al.)

 

Lesser Crested Tern Thalasseus bengalensis

1 at Jaffa Port (Amir Ben-dov, Noam weiss et al.), Photographed. Very rare vagrent in the mediterranean coast of Israel. Good record.

1 bird probably of that species flew north off Jaffa Port (Igal Miltaich, Barak Granit, Amir Ben-dov, Rami Mizrachi, Meidad Goren et al.). Very rare winter visitor

1 4th cal-year bird was seen and photographed off Jaffa Port (Igal Miltaich, Barak Granit, Amir Ben-dov, Rami Mizrachi, Meidad Goren et al.). Very rare visitor and even rarer in winter and in this plumage as most records involovs 1st year birds. photo

 

Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus

25 were noted off Jaffa Port, almost all first winter birds (Igal Miltaich, Barak Granit, Amir Ben-dov, Rami Mizrachi, Meidad Goren et al.). A winter record number.

50 Arctic and Arctic/Pomarine Skuas, 120 Yelkuan's Shearwaters, 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 4Cory's Shearwaters, 6 Kittiwakes, 9 Mediterranean Gulls and others,

1 photographed at MIshmar Haaemeq, Jezreel Valley. A 2nd bird found this winter. the bird at Timorim is still there.

One was photorgaphed yesterday at Ashdod beach (Amir Ben-dov) but identified only today. Good winter record of this scarce subspecies.

1 was pohotographed today at Beit Hashita, Western Beit Shean Valley, (Ofir Lotan). Apparently that bird is there since November.

Rock Bunting Emberiza cia

1 near Neot Mordechai, Hula valley (Assaf Sasson). Although the species is regular winterer on high ridges on both sides of the valley it is actually very rare or completely absent inside.

Another male discovered at Hulda Rservoir, Judean Plain (Shachar Alterman).

Flock of 16 geese, most probably White-fronted flew north over Beit-Hashita early morning (Amir Ben-dov)

 

White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala

About 2200 were counted at Jezreel Valley as part of the yearly mid-winter waterfowl count (NRA) - a record Number.

 

That is added to another 1100 White-headed Ducks which counted earlier at Judean Plain (Ezra Hadad), bringing the total wintering number to be over 3300 birds - a national record number.

Nice collection of species and numbers at Hamieshar included, 8-9 Asian Desert Warblers, 3Spectacled Warblers, 10 Temminck's Larks, 3 Hooded Wheatears, 7 Desert Wheatears, 4Mournings and 2 White-crowned Black Wheatears, as well as 17 Spotted Sandgrouses and 2Black-bellied Sandgrouses which are rare there (Ziv Cohen Sharon, Itamar Gurfinkel, Eliraz Dvir et al.) while 49 Crowned Sandgrouses, 4 Black Bellied Sandgrouses and 12 Temminck's Larks were at Nahal Trashim at the northern part of the Meishar (David Raved, David Koter and Meir Levi).

 

At Jaffa port,still good with 2 Sooty Shearwaters, some 90 Yelkouan Shearwaters, 5 Northern Gannets, 1 Pomarine Skua, 4 Arctic Skuas, 7 Pallas's Gulls and 100 Sandwich Terns (Tuvia Khan).

'Steppe' Merlin Falco columbarius pallidus

1 adult male north to Urim junction, North-Western Negev (Barak Granit & Shachar Alterman).

 

Photographed. Up to recently this central asian ssp have been considered to be a very rare vagrant to Israel, whie in recent years, an increasing number of winter records (1 every 1-2 years) exclusively from NW Negev indicating a more regular status (but still very rare). photo

 

Sociable Plover Vanellus gregarius

A flock of 6 birds was located at the very south of the "birding area" at Urim (Barak Granit & Shachcar Alterman). Probably different birds to the "power line" flock of 10 which was seen regularily throughout the winter.  photo

 

Eurasian Dotterel Charadrius morinellus

5 birds at southern Hatzerim, south-east to Urim at their regular wintering site.

The birds were associated with a group of 12 Kentish Plovers which are wintering out there on the desert steppes - peculiar but regular sight at this site (Barak Granit & Shachcar Alterman). photo

Red-billed Teal Anas erythrorhyncha

1 at Idan, northen Arava (Eli Haviv et al.). The bird was photographed and twitched by many observers during the afternoon. Apparently another bird of that species was photographed at Ashalim, northern Negev on August 13th (Elon Gur and Tuvia Khan) but the observers considered it as an escape. Potentially the 2nd and 3rd records for Israel after the 1st in 1958. photo

 

Bateleur Therathpius ecaudatus

1 juv bird perching on a tree, east of Bet Nir, Judean hills (Ezra Hadad). Potenially the 9th record for Israel. Interesting this species was already wintered in the same place during 2002.  

 

Asian Buff-bellied Pipit Anthus rubescens japonicus

1 north to Kfar Rupin (Tuvia Khan et al). The long staying Daurian Shrike and the Sociable Ploverare still at their place.  

 

Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus

1 was photographed at Ramot Menashe (Moshe Malal). Extremely rare in winter in Israel with 3-4 records only up to date.

1 seen and photographed at Wadi Rosh Pina, eastern Galilee (Ohad Sherer). The 7th bird found this winter and the 3rd outside Golan Heights.

1 heard calling near Nes Harim, Judean Hills (Barak Granit).

1 at the southern salt pans, south of the Birding Park Eilat (Itai Shani).

Another bird found today at Yarkon Park, Tel-Aviv (Yuval Dax).

 

Steppe Eagle Aquila nipalensis

Many tens migrating northwards (east actually) over eilat (Noam Weiss).

 

The Red-billed Teal was seen this morning flying from Idan to Hatzeva direction (Itai Shani). The Bateleur was not found despite extensive searchs (many birders).

At Eilat  - one to two Pallid Scops Owls Otus brucei is/are seen regularily and almost daily at Wadi Shlomo

 

At Jaffa port today: some 20 Gannets, 15 Skuas, mainly Pomarine, 1 Sooty Shearwater and 1Yelkouan (Shachar Alterman)

Among the  "very unusuals" - a very unusual and probably the largest gathering ever recorded here - some 25 birds, mainly adults, fishing off Jaffa Port (Igal Siman-tov).

4 birds were reported swimming off Ashkelon beach (Amir Ben-dov). Very unusual record.

1 was swimming off Ahkelon beach (Oz Horin and Amir Ben-dov). The species was not identified but according to the reporting birder, the bird showed a dark rump when it took off.

 

Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus

40 birds were off Ashkelon Beach this afternoon (Amir Ben-dov et al.) Apart from those some 22 Little Gulls, 15 Great Crested Grebe and a Sooty Shearwater were there as well.

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oentanthe cypriaca - Not less than 5 (!) birds were found at Tel-Baruch coast and the nearby "Hatzook" coast,Tel-aviv north. All were adult males and all were found along 1 km streach (Igal Siman-tov, Barak Granit et al.).

 

Another bird was found at Ramat-Gan Safari zoo,(Anat Gal) and another bird was found at Shikmona coast, Haifa (Nitai Hayun). What a day for that species! photo

 

Pied Wheatear Oentanthe pelschanka - A male at km 20, Eilat (IBRCE)

 

Desert Wheatear Oenanthe deserti - SIx, 3 males and 3 females at Tel-Baruch coast (Barak Granit, Igal Siman-tov et al.). Very good number for central-northern Israel.

 

Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax- 2 males at Tel-Baruch Coast (Barak Granit et al.) First record ther for 31 years!  Also there, no less than 12 Ruppell's Warblers

 

Spectacled Warbler Sylvia conspicillata - a male at Tel-Baruch (Itamar Gurfinkel et al.). Another great bird and a rare one for the coastal plain

 

Caspian Plover Charadrius asiaticus - 1 male at Yotvata Circular field (Itai Shani). An early vanguard.

 

Bimaculated Lark Melanocorypha bimaculata - 2 at Tel Baruch (Barak Granit), 2 at Yotvata (Itai Shani), 2 at Km 20 (Christoph Gruneberg) and 1 at Eilat Mountains (Tim Jones)

 

Semi-collatd Flycatcher Ficedula semitorquata - a male at Tel-aviv (Itamar Gurfinkel)

 

Egyptian NIghtjar Caprimulgus aegyptius - 2 at Yotvata fields this evening (Christoph Gruneberg)

 

Also et the southern Arava: 4 Gull-bill Terns at the bird park, eilat while the White-tailed Lapwaing is still present at Yotvata.

Menetries's Warbler Sylvia mystacea - a female was found at Holand Park, Eilat, first for the season (Itai Shani et al.)

 

Richard's PIpit Anthus richardi - 3 at Rishpon (Tuvia Khan et al.) and one at Hatzook coast (Igal Siman-tov)

 

Cinereous Bunting Emberiza cineracea - 13 were at Wadi Tzviya, Mt. Gilboa (David Koter et al.), 3 were at Susita, lake of Galilee (Lior Kislev). Both sites are regular and became well known as CB land. 1 at Mt Arbel (Nitay Haiun)

 

Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans - 1 at the bird park, Eilat (Noam Weiss), 1 at Nitzana (Jonathan Meyrav) and one at Rishpon (Tuvia Khan)

 

Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax - 1 at Wadi Tzviya, Gilboa (David Koter et al)

Red-fronted Serin Serinus Pussilus - 2 were at Susita, Lake of Galilee (Tzvi Hertz). Very late date for this species.

 

Black Bush Robin Cercotrichas podobe - 1 singing male at Holland Park (Barak Granit). Apparently this bird was found a week ago but hasn't been seen since till relocated today.  

 

Redwing Turdus Iliacus - 1 was at km 20 date plantation (IBRCE team). Rare at Eilat with 1 every few years only.

 

Bimaculated Lark Melanocorypha bimaculata - 30 were at Hameishar (Itai Shani, Dan Alon and Barak Granit)

 

Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans - 4-5 birds reported from verious places at the south and center of Israel, few of them were long stayers.

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oentanthe cypriaca - 1 male was yesterday at Yotvata northern fields (Finnish birders) while the female at k.20 was still there this morning (Amir Ben-dov)

 

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens - 1 was yesterday at a tomato field at km 20 (Barak.Granit)

 

Oriental Skylark Alauda gulgula - 1 was still present at an onion field km 20 (Barak Granit)

 

Variegata Eastern Stonechat Saxicola torquata variegata - 1 breeding male was at a tomtao field at km 20 (Barak Granit) while another male was at Neot Smadar alfalfa fields (Hadoram Shirihai).

 

This ssp, once called "armenicus" is still the rarest of all Eastern Sotnchats forms which appears in Israel.

Grey Hypocolius Hypocolius ampelinus - a 1st year male (?) was found on the 26th and photographed at Ashkelon National Park, southern coastal plain (Oded Levi).

An amazing record involving the first Hypocolius outside the Southern Arava.

 

Black Bush Robin Cercotrichas podobe - a new bird was found at Yotvata sewage during the eilat festival, apparently was heard singing there already a week ago (Itai Shani). The bird at Holland park was still there

 

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca - 1 was at Kisra, Western Galilee (David Raved)

 

Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans - 4 were at Tel-Shikmona (David Koter et al.) while 2-3 birds were found during the champions of the flyways in the Negev (Champions teams)

 

Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus - 1 at Tel Baruch (Igal Siman-tov) and 1 was flying over Oranit at the same day (LIav Siman-tov). Nice findings by father and son at the same day at two different places.

Stejneger's Stonechat Saxicola (Maurus) stejnegerii - a potential first for Israel was caught, ringed and photographed yesterday at the Eilat Bird Park (IBRCE).

 

Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus - 1 juv migrated over kisra, western Galilee (Rei Segali). Photographed. The 9/10th record for Israel and quite an amazing one.

 

Dunn's Lark Eremalauda dunni - 2 'additional birds were seen/photographed at Beit Yanai and Habonim beaches (Maya Osher and Omer Tamari)

 

Red Knot Calidris canutus - one was photographed yesterday at Maagn Michael fishponds (Jean-pierre Jordan et al.). Very rare in spring.

 

Demoiselle's Crane Anthropoides virgo - 4 were photographed south east of Hula reserve on the 29.3 (Jean-pierre Jordan et al.)

 

Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus  - 8 at Hayarkon Park, Tel Aviv (Itamar Gurfinkel). Rare at the coast.

 

Caspian Plover Charadrius asiaticus - 1 at Yotvata circular field (Itai Shani et al).

 

 


Wednesday - Saturday, April 1 - 4,  2015


 

There was very little to report during the last 4 days when highlights were a Short-eared Owl at Nachsholim beach on the 1st (Chen Rozen) and male Subalpine Warbler at Tel-Baruch dunes today (Tuvia Khan et al.).

 

Some new migrants were noted throughout the country including Wood Warblers when 14 of them were counted at Hanadiv park (David Koter) and some both PIed and Collard Flycatchres.

 

Frank Moffat reported an exceptional 5 (!) different Goshawk sightings during the past 5 days from Mt. Yoash, Yotvata and km. 76, representing the best spring for that species in Eilat for decades!

 

Attention attractors namely the Grey Hypocolius at Ashkelon, the Caspian Plover at Yotvata and the Black Bush Robin at Samar sewage, were all seen at their places throughout the past week including today.

Yellow-billed Kite Milvus aegyptius - an injured 2nd cal year bird which was found in Rahat, north to Beer-Sheva, was brought into care to the Hospital for wild animals and suspected to be of that species by Shlomo Landau. Identification was confirm later by Dick Forsman. The 4th Israeli record if accepted.

No big news today, still a flock of 1000 European Bee-eaters came to roost at Kfar Rupin (Avner Rinot), an impressive flock.

 

Several thousands of White Storks migrated over eastern Galilee and were seen mainly by Dan Alon, while at the far south, the White-Cheeked Tern was seen again at the Eilat North Beach while 13 Red-necked Phalaropes were still at km 20 salt pans (IBRCE team).


On the Belated news section: 1 Short-eared Owl was seen last evening at Shadmot-Mechola (Avner Rinot).

Pale Rock Sparrow Carpospiza breachydactyla - more than 20 birds, mostly singinig male were at both Sde Boker region and "Maale Akrabim" area, indicating another invasion year to the Negev desert as breeders (Adi Ganz, Itamar Gurfinkel)

 

At Se'ifim plain: the BC Sparrow Lark  was still present along side a Hoopoe Lark, 3 Bimaculated Larks, 12 Bar-tailed Desert Larks and a Hooded Wheatear (Itai Shani and the local young bird club).

Little Green Bee-eater Merops orientalis - 1 was at En Gev, Lake of Galilee (Lior Kislev). The northernmost record for Israel up to date.

 

Arctic Skua Stercorarius parsiticus - 4 at Eilat North Beach (Dogh Gochfeld).

 

Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae - 1 was photogrphed on electric pylon, attacked by Common Kestrel at Mishmar Haemeq, Jezrael Valley. The first for the season.

 

 

A great wave of passerines and others finally attacked  EIlat and the southern Arava, especially places like the Eilat Bird Park, Yotvata and others:  At Eilat Bird Park some 10 Curlew Sandpipers, 5 Red-necked Phalaropes, 20 Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters, 5 Penduline Tits, 30 Masked Shrikes, 100 Olivaceous Warblers, 30 Bonelli's Warblers, 600 Lesser Whitethroats, 1,000 Blackcaps, 40 Orphean Warblers, 10 Common and 20 Thrush Nightingales were noted among many others (IBRCE team).

 

Among the long steyers: The Grey Hypocolius is still at Askelon National Park.

Taiga Flycatcher Ficedulla albicila ?? - an (adult?) male was photographed at Yael Shif's home garden, at the town of Eilat! (Yael Shiff).

 

Although a long awaited record that could finalize the species apearrance in Israel, additional photos which were published later on showed mix characters with Red-breasted Flycatcher, raising doubts concerning the species idnetity as Taiga and reopen the identification process.  An interesting bird altogether. The "Taiga Flycatcher" saga has officially ended when Avner Cohen saw and heard the bird this morning and describe a typical Red-Breasted Flycatcher calls.

 

Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus - a singing male carrying breeding material was seen and photographed at Ashkelon (Oded Levi) - the first documentation of breeding attempt of that species in Israel.  photo

 

Rosy Starling Pastor roseus - an adult was at the Eilat Bird Park (Noam Weiss et al.)

 

Richard's Pipit Anthus richardi - 4 were at Arsuf, north to Tel-Aviv (Yochai Wasserlauf)

 

Pale Rock Sparrow Carpospiza brachydacyia – 21 were at Kumeran National Park, northern Dead Sea (Nissim Primo) and many tens were singing around Ezuz ,upper wadi Nizzana (Avi Shneor) and in the HIgh Negev Moutain (Yochai Koren).

Seems like great breeding year for this species.

 

Little TernSterna albifrons – one was at Neot Smadar sewage (Doug Gochfeld). An odd location.

 

Cyprus Pied Wheatear Oenatnthe cypriaca – the bird from the 15th at Tel-Baruch was still there during the weekend.

White-winged Black Tern Childonias leucopterus – a flock of 1000 birds appeared at the Eilat Bird Park in the evening (Noam Weiss). Probably a part of X thousands birds which continued north unnoticed.

Ruppell's Warbler Sylvia ruppelli - an adult male was at the Eilat Bird Park (Barak Granit and Avi Shneor) – a rather late bird.

 

Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla - a 1st summer bird was at Eilat Km 20 saltpans (Doug Gochfeld. Barak Granit et al.)

 

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus - about 47 birds were at Eilat bird Park and Km 20 (Doug Gochfeld. Barak Granit et al.) A good number.

 

Gull-billed Tern Gleochelidon nilotica - small but steady numbers were noted between Eilat and Yotvata, about 20 altogether.

Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae  - 4 different birds were at Eilat, Golan Heights, Maagan MIchael and Kesem junction (Shachcar Shalev,Ohad Sherer, Shachar Alterman, Amir Ben-dov).

 

Crested Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhyncus – 1 was over EIlat mountains on the 23rd (Shachcar Shalev).

 

Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus – 7 were near Hananya junction on the 23rd (Ohad Sherer), possibly breeding there.

 

Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothaustes – 9 were still at the JBO (Avner Rinot).

 

Black-headed Bunting Emberiza melanocephala – the first arrivals were seen at Emeq Habacha, Golan Heights on the 24th (LIor Kislev).

 

Olive-tree Warbler Hippolais olivetorum – 2 birds were seen alongside an Upcher's WarblerHippolais languida at the JBO (Itamar Gurfenkel).

 

Blue-cheeked Bee-eater Merops persicus– 1 or more migrated over Kibbutz Merhavya on the 24th(Barak Granit).

Good numbers of passerines and others are seen quite everywhere, including good numbers of Golden Orioles, Olive Tree Warblers and alike. The first big wave of Honey Buzzards was noted at Eilat mountains on the 26th including some 7,000 Levant Sparrowhawks.

 

Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae  -  4 additional birds were reported or photographed during  the last coiple of days including 2 over Kisra, 1 over Oranit  and 1 over Modiin (Rei Segali, Igal Simantov et al.)

 

Crested Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhyncus – 1 at Yotvata sewage (Doug Gochfeld)

 

Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus – today 4 migrated north with 2 Pomarine and 1 Arctic Skua over Eilat North Beach and 1 was at same place yesterday (Itai Shani, Doug Gochfeld et al.)

 

White-cheeked Tern Sterna repressa – 1 was at Eilat north Beach on both days (Doug Gochfeld et al.)

 

Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica – 1 ringed at Atlit (Yosef Kiat et al.)

A week day all over due to the 'Hamsin' -  low pressure system characterized in hot temperatures, but still, at Eilat Bird Park some nice selection of birds including 16 Gull-billed Terns, 41 </
