28.10.2015

Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe Cypriaca - an unprecedented event occured  when probably hundreds of birds washed the Med Sea shores of Israel as a result of low preasure system above the sea.

Tens were noted in some visited sites: 33-40 were at Tel-Baruch (Igal Siman-tov, Barak Granit, Avi Shneor, Ezra Hadad et al.), 13 were at Palmachim (Jonathan Meyrav), about 20 birds were at Ashdod (Avner Rinot) and several were at other different spots along the coast. More than 80 birds were noted altogether. Photo

29-30.10.2015

Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe Cypriaca - Many birds have left the coasts on the following day though still some 3-4 birds were seen at various places. Out of the coast one was near Aderet, One was at Zin field near Sede Boker and one was at Hameishar.

On the 30th, 10 more birds were north to Tel-Baruch, not included in the big count fo the 28th. Apparently, on the 28th at Tel-Baruch, numbers in the afternoon were higher than the morning's numbers with estimation of 50 birds altogether (Arad Ben-david).

This estimation makes sense since heavy showers continued for hours from late morning into early afternoon so more birds were forced to land. Incredible event.

Note: the event was described in various places on the net as resulted from "stormy wheather" so the wheatears were pushed to the shore by the winds. However, apart from short mini-hurricane that occurred on Sunday morning, 3 days before the 28th, the weather in and off land was quite calm, although heavily rainy. In other words: the heavy rains and not winds forced the birds to land.
