Below is a summary of the most interesting sightings and highlights

for March 2016

 

 

Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis - one at Neve-Ur, Beit Shean valley on the 5th-7th

 

Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina - The Hatzerim area male lingered till the 5th, when it was last seen at Arieh Reservoir.

 

Black Vulture aegypius monachus - two at Gamla on the 4th

 

 

 

 

Crested Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhynchus - one at Eilot date plantation on the 16th, and probably the same bird at km 20 on the 28th

 

Rough-legged Buzzard Buteo lagopus - the 'Sde Moshe' bird was still there on the 25th

 

Goshawk Accipiter gentilis - an adult bird was near Tel-Phares, Golan Heights on the 3rd and an adult on mt Gilboa on the 17th

 

'Steppe' Merlin Falco columbarius palidus - one near Gamla, Golan Heights on the 21st

 

Demoiselle's Crane Grus virgo - up to five birds at the Agamon, Hula Valley (5 on the 21st )

 

 

 

Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus - nine at Eilat on the 27th and one there on the 29th

 

Caspian Plover Charadrius asiaticus - the first and only so far for this spring was at Ovda Valley on the 26th

 

Red Knot Calidris canutus - two at Nachsholim ponds on the 17th

 

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus - early arrivles at km 20 including 5 during the COFT and 12 on the 31st

 

Long-tailed Skua Strecorarius longicaudus - five at Eilat north Beach on the 27th

 

Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus - two at the North Beach on the 15th

 

Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus - an adult bird was at the IBRCE ponds on the 3rd and a first summer bird at the same place on the 29th during the COFT

 

Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla - one at the Eilat Bird Park on the 9th

 

Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus - one at km 19 and one at Ramat Tzvaim, both on the 25th

 

Egyptian Nightjar Caprimulgus aegyptius - one was at Yotava on the 29th during the COFT

 

Thick-billed Lark Ramphocoris clotbaey - up to 8 birds including a family with 3 young fledglings were seen daily at km 82 from the 11th onward. One at Yotvata on the 16th and Nine at Seifim plain on the 31st

 

 

 

 

Dunn's Lark Eremalauda dunni - two at Seifim plain from the 16th onwards

 

Small Skylark Alauda gulgula - two to four birds were at Yotvata throughout the month as well as one at Sde Boker

 

Blyth's Pipit Anthus godlewskii - one at Arsuf, north to Tel-aviv on the 19th. The 5th Israeli record. Interestingly, the 4th Israeli record was exactly at the same place around the same time of year (13.3.2008)

 

 

 

Masked Wegtail Motaicilla alba personata - one at southern Dead Sea on the between 23rd-25th

 

Black Bush Robin Cercotrichas podobe - apart from the 'Hi-bar' birds, 4 different individuals at km 19, Yotvata, and Lotan area between 23rd-28th

 

Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush Monticola saxatilis - quite a few birds were at various sites at the Negev, mainly from the 24th with 6 birds at Mt Amsa on the 24th and 5 there on the 30th

 

Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca - one at Ramot Menashe on the 18th and one at Nizzana on the 27th

 

Kurdish Wheatear Oenanthe xanthoprymna - a male was photographed at Majdal Shams, Golan Heights on the 18th. The long staying bird at km 68 was last seen around that time

 

Menetreies's Warbler Sylvia myctacea - at Yotvata one on the 8th and one on the 29th; one at Holand Park on the 17th and one at km 82 on the 25th

 

Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans - quite a good wave was notable mainly at the Arava between the 17th-28th including 6 on the 17th-18th with few birds at Tel-aviv and the JBO at the same time

 

Semi-Collard Flycatcher Ficedula Semitorquata - good wave of those was apparent at many places in the Negev, with 3-4 birds per site mainly beteween 26th-30th with fewer birds prior to that

 

 

 

 

Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva - a male at km 20, Eilat, on the 21st

 

Daurian Shrike Lanius isabellinus - a male at Yerucham lake on the 29th, found during the COFT

 

Brown-necked Raven Corvus ruficollis - one at Modi’in on the 17th, well north of normal distribution range.

 

Fan-tailed Raven Corvus rhipidurus - 20 birds at km 76 on the 9th. An unusual number at an unusual site

 

Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes - 32 at Hatzofim mountian, Jerusalem on the 22nd

 

 

 

 

Pale Rock Sparrow Carpospiza brachydactyla - unusually high numbers includes 224 birds at Ovda valley on the 3rd and 120 birds at Seifim plain on the 11th. All departed after about two weeks.

 

Cinereous Bunting Emberyza cineracea  - 15 at wadi Tziya, Mt Gilboa on the 18th, including 3 birds of the eastern ssp semenowi on the 22nd. 6 different sightings of singles at the Arava and southern Negev between the 29th-31st
