Below is a summary of the most interesting sightings and highlights of May 2016

 

 

Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel Oceanodroma monorhis - one at Eilat's southern beach on the 8th. The 6th record for Israel if accepted.

 

Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus - two adults at the North Beach, Eilat on the 20th. First for this spring/summer.

 

Brown Booby Sula leucogaster - one at the North Beach, Eilat on the 20th-21st.

 

Bateleur Therathopius ecaudatus - a 2nd cy bird passed over Eilat mountains on the 9th.

 

'fulvescens' Greater Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga - one was videotaped at Jezreel valley on the 16th. A rarity by its own, this is also the latest record of any Aquila clanga in Israel up to date.

 

Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio - one at Kfar Rupin on the 11th and two at Maayan Zvi on the 23rd.

 

Crab Plover Dromas ardeola - one at Eilat north Beach on the 7th. The 5th Israeli record. Though landed on the beach for a brief moment, the bird was seen for rather prolonged time flying back and forth over the gulf before heading south.

 

 

 

Broad-billed Sandpiper Limicola falcinellus -  a rather nice late peak with 19 - 22 at Eilat (highest number for many years) between the 8th-12th. 13 at En-Hamifratz fishponds, Acre valley on the 12th as well.

 

Red-necked Phlarope Phalaropus lobatus - good spring for this species (though not excessing the regular range) with peak of 55-65 birds simultaneously at different saltpans and sewage ponds of Eilat, on the 14th and 15th.

 

 

Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea - two different birds at Eilat's Norh beach: one on the 5th and one on the 12th. Extremely rare in May (most records are from July/August) though probably overlooked.

 

White-cheeked Tern Stern repressa - 3 at the North Beach on the 28th. The first birds for the season.

 

Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica - at Eilat, a rather good spring for this species with daily sightings of small to moderate flocks during the month, but with peak of 60 (probably more) on the 15th .

 

Sandwich Tern Sterna sandvicensis - 65 at Eilat on the 12th. An outstanding number for Eilat.

 

White-winged Tern Chlidonias leucopterus - 1,200 at Eilat's North Beach on the 1st.

 

Black Tern Chlidonias niger - one at Maayan Zvi on the 25th-27th. The only national record for this spring.

 

Long-tailed Skua Stercorarius longicaudus - normally singletons at Eilat’s North beach throughout the month, with max: 5 on the 16th. A good spring for them at Eilat

 

Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus - one at Hayrkon park, Tel-aviv, on the 12th.

 

Oriental Turtle Dove Streptopelia orientalis - one photographed at Einot Gibton on the 6th. 13th Israeli record and the only (documented) spring record up to date.

 

 

 

Temminck's Lark Eremophila bilopha - good numbers apparently breed at the southern Negev 'large wadis', i.e 80 birds mostly fledglings were noted on the 14th-15th.

 

Arabian Dunn's Lark Eremalauda dunni - one at wadi Ktifa (southern Negev 'large wadis') on the 7th.

 

 

 

 

Black Bush Robin Cercotrichas podobe - one at En Feshcha, Northern Dead Sea around the 10th. The northernmost record of this species up to date.

 

White-crowned Wheatear Oenanthe leucopyga - a rather fresh juvenlie at Hasharon beach, Med coast, north to Tel-Aviv on the 2nd. Rare outside breeding range.

 

River Warbler Locustella fluviatilis - only 5 records during the month, all ringed between the 1st-19th, among them 4 at the JBO and one at the Agamon, Hula valley.

 

Paddyfield Warber Acrocephalus agricola - one caught, ringed and released at Eilat ringing station. The 11th Israeli record.

 

 

 

 

Barred Warbler Sylvia nisoria - good numbers at central Israel with 15 at the JBO (not all ringed) on the 3rd and a peak of 20 that were ringed there on the 13th.

 

Garden Warbler Sylvia borin - a rather good spring with 49 were ringed at Yerucham lake on the 2nd and 61 there on the 3rd. during same days 30 ringed at the JBO and 25 at Modii'n Hills.

 

 

 

Olive Tree Warbler Hippolais Olivetorum - very good spring for this species at central Israel (very poor at the  south and Eilat) i.e at the JBO 6 ringed on the 1st, 14 on the 5th and 20 on the 13th.

 

Upcher's Warbler Hippolais languida -  out of their breeding range, 4 birds were reported between the 10th-13th: at Mt. Gilboa, JBO, Eilat and Elkana.

 

Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva - 3 between the 6th-13th, of which two at central Arava and one ringed at the JBO.

 

Rosy Starling Pastor roseus - low numbers this spring without any large groups. Mainly singletons with max 4 at En Zivan, Golan heights on the 17th.

 

Siskin Carduelis spinus - one at Hayarkon park on the 8th. Unusually late record
