Below is a summary of the most interesting sightings and highlights

for November 2017

 

 

 

Black-throated Diver Gavia arctica - an exhausted bird was found and collected at Haifa beach on the 12th and brought into care.

 

Brown Booby Sula leucogaster - one at Eilat’s north beach from the 17th onwards

 

Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus - four different birds on the 10th-11th in eastern Galilee, Jordan Valley, Judean Desert and over Petach Tikva

 

Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus - one at wadi Gerer, NW Negev on the 21st and probably the same one near Beit Nir on the 29th

 

Red-wattled Lapwing Vanellus indicus - one near Kfar Blum, Hula valley on the 13th. Third Israeli record. Last seen on the 20th.

Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius - twelve to sixteen birds at Urim.

 

Dotterel Charadrius morinellus - up to 100 birds at Hatzerim and about 20 at Ze’elim-Gevulot. One at Kalya on the 10th.

 

Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia - two at Kfar Rupin on the 7th.

 

Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus - 8 birds altogether throughout the month, 6 of which at the Med. coast, mainly at Tel-aviv area but two also at Kfar Rupin and at Kibbutz Lotan.

 

Black-bellied Sandgrouse Pterocles orientalis - 200 at Gevulot-Zeelim, NW Negev on the 24th, larger number than ever for this area. One at Elifaz reservoir, southern Arava on the 6th where it’s extremely rare.

 

Thick-billed Lark Rhamphocoris clotbey - up to 30 daily at Uvda valley and up to 12 at Km 94 central Arava.

Oriental Skylark Alauda gulgula - one at Beer Sheva on the 1st. Ten on one field at Kfar Rupin on the 3rd-4th, of which one was ringed, and 5-6 remained for the entire month.

 

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens - one at Hatzor, coastal plain on the 10th.

 

Temminck's Lark Eremophila bilopha - up to 120 birds daily at Uvda valley.

 

Asian Buff-bellied PIpit Anthus Rubescens japonicus - up to 4 birds at Hamadyia, Beit-beit Shean valley and two at Kfar Rupin. 3 birds at the coastal plain: one at Hefer valley and one at Gaash on the 20th-25th, and one on active migration over Hatzook Beach on the 2nd. One at Yerucham lake on the 23rd.

 

Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni - two at Sde Boker on the 9th, one at Mitzpe Ramon between 22nd-24th, one at IBRCE (ringed) between the 22nd-29th.

Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris - two reported at mt Hermon on the 18th.

 

Radde's Accentor Prunella ocularis - one at Gamla on the 25th.

 

Ring Ouzel Turdus torquatus - 1st winter, probably female ringed at Sde Boker on the 9th.

Eye-browed Thrush Turdus obscurus? - a possible one seen briefly at Lotan on the 22nd.

 

Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca - three at Hatzook beach on the 2nd

 

Basalt Wheatear Oenanthe warriae - in addition to the bird found at Uvda valley at the end of October two extra birds found at the arava: one at Amram pillars on the 11th and one at Beer ora on the 18th.

Kurdish Wheatear Oenanthe Xanthoprymna - a male found at kibbutz Ketura, southern Arava on the 26th.

Red-tailed Wheatear Oenanthe moesta - in addition to the female found at Uvda Valley at the end of October a male and a female were found at km 94, central arava on the 4th, remained throughout the month.

 

Menetries's Warbler Sylvia mystacea - a male at the Eilat birding park on the 10th.

 

Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus - 9 birds altogether between the 2nd and the 21st at: two at Tel-aviv, Ramat Gan, one ringed at the JBO on the 8th, and the rest at the Negev including Meitar, Great Crater, Nafcha, Neot Smadar, IBRCE and Eilat Cemetery.

Hume's Warbler Phylloscopus humei - 3 birds: one at Ketura on the 10th-11th, one at Tel-aviv on the 12th, One at Lotan on the 22nd.

 

Red-breasted Flycatcher Ficedula parva - 5 birds until the 10th, mainly at the Negev.

 

Steppe Shrike Lanius pallidirostris - one, unringed bird at Tel-baruch (Tel-Aviv) on the 24th - a different bird to the ringed long stayig bird at the near-by Hatzzok beach. One at Urim on the 24th.

 

Daurian Shrike Lanius Isabellinus - 5 birds, 4 of which at Beit Shean valley throughout the month and one at the Arbel on the 27th.

 

Rosy Starling Pastor roseus - two at Arsuf on the 3rd and one at Kfar Rupin on the 25th onwards.

 

Syrian Serin Serinus syriacus - 14 at Nafcha on the 10th-11th.

 

Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus - one ringed at Sde Boker on the 17th.

 

Common Crossbill Loxia curvirostra? - a putative bird was heard at Hertzel mountain on the 16th. A question mark remained for this rarity.

 

Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla -a great month for that species with 7-8 birds in total: an amazing unprecedented gathering of 4-5 birds at Hefer swamp throughout the first half of the month, 3 of which were ringed (one at the end of October).

Other sights included one at Kerem Ben-zimra (eastern upper Galilee) on the 11th and one at Nir-oz, NW Negev on the same day, and one at IBRCE on the 5th.
