Below is a summary of the most interesting sightings and highlights

for January 2018.

 

 

Uid Swan Cygnus sp - 5 birds over Ramot to the north-west on the 6th. Species couldn't be identified

 

Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus - one at Eilat's birding park from the 3rd onwards, later on moved to km19 where it remained. 10th Israeli record

Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris - 50-60 birds at Hefer valley on the 3rd. Amazing number for this area

 

Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina - a male at Lochamey Hagetaot, northern coastal stripe on the 10th

 

Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator - one-two birds were still at Acre at the beginning of the month while one remained there till the month’s end.

 

Leach's Storm Petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa - one was found exhausted at Bet-yam shore south of Tel-aviv on the 21st, brought into care but unfortunately didn’t survive. Two, presumably of that species off Maagan Michael on the 23rd

 

Sooty Shearwater Puffinus girseus - one off Jaffa port on the 19th

 

Brown Booby Sula leucogaster - one-two birds at Eilat during the first week and occasionally afterwards.

 

Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus - one at Yesodot on the 16th and 3 at the Golan on the 30th

 

Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus - a juv/imm seen near Zeelim, NW Negev on the 3rd. four days later it (?) was photographed at Ruchama. Could it be the same long stayer or perhaps another bird?

Crested Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhynchus - a juv confirmed to over-winter at the Carmel mountain on the 11th (the same bird was photographed at the same place a month before)

 

Goshawk Accipiter gentilis - one at Kamun on the 23rd

 

Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax  - one north to Kibbutz Gadot on the 10th

 

Red-wattled Lapwing Vanellus indicus - an adult at Afikim fishponds, northern Jordan valley from the 12th-27th. Twitched and photographed by many birders. 4th Israeli record and a second one for this winter.

Common Gull Larus canus - only handful altogether at Harod valley, Shikmona and Jaffa, all between 5th-11th

 

Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus - not more than 10 birds throughout the month from Acre to Jaffa with max. 3 off Jaffa on the 19th. Interestingly an inland record of two at Ramat-Gan Safari park on the 15th

 

Sandwich Tern Sterna Sandvicensis - the first for Jerusalem was at the 'gazelle valley' on the 18th

 

Oriental Skylark Alauda gulgula - five-six birds at Kfar Rupin and one at Yotvata

 

Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni - 0ne at Eilat' birding park on the 15th

 

Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus - 13 at Nebi Semuel, Jerusalem on the 18th

 

Basalt Wheatear Oenanthe lugens warriae - all three birds (Uvda valley, Beer Ura and Amram Pillars) where at their spots throughout the month

 

Kurdish Wheatear Oenanthe Xanthoprymna - the male at Kibbutz Ketura was there throughout the month.

 

Red-rumped Wheatear Oenanthe moesta - the female at Uvda valley and the male at km 94 were present throughout the month though the km 94's female was not relocated during January

 

Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus - one, by a wintering Hume’s Warbler, at Ironi Alef high-school, Tel-aviv were it was overwintering during the past three winters

 

Daurian Shrike Lanius isabellinus - wintering birds were found at Revadim, Hefer valley, Ma’ayan Zvi, Kfar Rupin and Hamadiya.

'Steppe' Great Grey Shrike Lanius e. pallidirostris - one at Yotvata from the 12th onwards and one south to Elrom, Golan hights on the 21st

 

Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus - one at the IBRCE on the 17th

 

Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla - one west of the Agmon, Hula valley on the 30th.
