Israel lies at the very heart of one of the world's largest migration routes.

Twice a year, hundreds of millions of birds pass through the region on their way to and from their Eurasian breeding grounds. Most of these birds only stop for a brief refueling session and continue the journey, while others remain to winter.

The conservation of Israel's natural habitats is crucial to the survival of millions of birds. Migrants rely on these places as stop-over sites before crossing the vast strip of deserts to the south, or immediately following the crossing when moving north in the spring.

Due to its relatively small size and excellent infrastructure, Israel is an especially easy and  comfortable country to explore. During both migration seasons and through winter, almost every pond, field and open area holds birds, offering unique opportunities for birders and photographers.
